Hey everyone! Have you ever wondered about self-defense moves that go beyond just punches and kicks? Well, stick with me because I’m going to teach you! Today, we’re going to explore some really cool and effective techniques that can help you stay safe in different situations.
While punches and kicks are great in some cases, they’re not always the best option, especially if someone is a lot stronger than you. That’s why it’s good to know about other options, and that’s what I’m going to teach you! Let’s explore some awesome self-defense moves that don’t rely on just striking.
Self-defense Moves: Escapes and Grappling
Sometimes, an attacker might try to grab you. I’m going to show you how to escape!
Wrist Grab Escapes
Imagine someone grabs your wrist. Pulling your hand away directly won’t work very well. Instead, try this:
- Quickly turn your wrist in the direction of their thumb.
- While you’re turning, pull your hand back. This will help you break free!
Bear Hug Escapes
A bear hug is when someone wraps their arms tightly around you. To escape, try these tricks:
- Drop your weight suddenly to make it harder for them to hold you.
- Stomp on their feet or scrape your foot down their shins from the knee to the foot. Ouch!
- If you see a wall or a piece of furniture, try to push them into it to get them off balance.
Headlock Escapes
If someone puts you in a headlock, they’re trying to squeeze your head. It’s important to protect your breathing and get free:
- Tuck your chin down to make it harder for them to choke you.
- Try to trap their hand with your arm to loosen their grip.
- If you can, strike their eyes or groin to get them to let go.
Choke Escapes
Chokes are super dangerous! You need to act fast to break free:
- Tuck your chin to protect your throat.
- Try to grab their hand that’s choking you and pull it away.
- Strike their eyes, nose, or groin to force them to release you.
Remember: The goal is to escape and get to safety. Don’t try to fight unless you absolutely have to!
Joint Manipulation and Pressure Points as Self-defense Moves
You can use joint locks and pressure points to control an attacker without using a lot of force.
Joint Locks
Joint locks work by bending someone’s joints in a way they’re not supposed to go, forcing them to give up.
Pressure Point Strikes
Pressure points are specific areas on the body that are extra sensitive. Striking, grabbing and/or twisting these points can cause pain and make the attacker back off. Some pressure points include:
- Eyes
- Nose
- Throat
- Groin
- Ears

Self-defense Moves Using Your Surroundings
Your environment can be your best friend in a dangerous situation!
Objects as Weapons
You can use everyday items as weapons to defend yourself:
- A bunch of keys can be used like a hammer to strike an attacker.
- A heavy bag or backpack can be swung to create distance.
- A sturdy umbrella can be used to block or strike.
Creating Distance
Look for obstacles that can help you:
- Use furniture, walls, or even parked cars to put something between you and the attacker.
- Run towards areas with lots of people or good lighting where you’re more likely to get help.
Yelling for Help
If you’re in trouble, don’t be afraid to shout for help!
- Make direct eye contact with people nearby and tell them specifically what you need, like “Call the police!”
Staying Safe: It’s All About Prevention!
Here are some tips to avoid dangerous situations:
Be Aware of Your Surroundings
- Pay attention to who is around you when you’re walking.
- Avoid being glued to your phone so you can see what’s happening.
Look Confident
- Walk with your head up and make eye contact with people. This shows you are not an easy target.
Talk Your Way Out
- Sometimes, you can avoid a fight by talking calmly and respectfully to the attacker. Try to understand what they want and see if there’s a way to resolve the situation peacefully.
