The Three Pillars (3P)
Definition: The foundational training model of Kyo-Jitsu Ryu, comprising the Psychological, Philosophical, and Physical layers of safety.
Master the 3P model: Psychology and philosophy lead your defense as constant guardians. The physical is the final fail-safe to protect your sovereignty. Most safety training starts and ends with the physical. We do the opposite. We train the mind and the “why” first, so that the body only has to act when all other defenses have been bypassed.
The Hierarchy of Defense
Personal safety is a layered architecture. We train from the top down to ensure the conflict is a last resort.
1. Psychological
The First Line. This is active awareness and de-escalation. By managing your own ego and recognizing threats early, you win the conflict before it ever reaches your physical space.
2. Philosophical
The “Why.” This is your strategic framework. It dictates the ethics and logic of your actions. It keeps you focused on the result (Home) rather than the contest (Winning).
3. Physical
The Fail-Safe. Mechanics are for when time runs out or the first two pillars fail. We use forensic efficiency to end the conflict and immediately return to the path home.
🛡️ Build Your Architecture
Training the body without training the mind is just learning how to fight and increase the level of danger that you and others are in. Master all three layers of the system to protect your sovereignty and your safety.
Start Your DesignWhy Psychology & Philosophy Lead
In a real-world scenario, you might not have time to think. You might have to move straight to the physical fail-safe. However, your psychological and philosophical training should be constantly active in the background.
The Psychological Advantage
If your psychology is trained, you see the “exit” before the door is blocked. You recognize the “Interview” before the attack. This pillar allows you to navigate around trouble rather than through it.
The Philosophical Compass
Philosophy is the anchor. It prevents your ego from turning a manageable situation into a dangerous one. It reminds you that “Victory is Leaving,” which simplifies every choice you make under pressure.
The Tenet: “We train the body to support the mind, not to replace it.”
The Strategy of Results
“Control yourself. Otherwise, something or someone else will.”— Sensei B. Duncan
We prioritize psychology and philosophy because they are the most efficient tools we have. Physical force is expensive—it costs energy, legal resources, and mental peace. By keeping the mind sharp and the philosophy active, we ensure that if we *must* use physical force, it is done with total forensic clarity and minimal blow-back.
A master of the 3P model isn’t the person who can win the most fights; it’s the person who is never in a fight to begin with, because their awareness and strategy made them a “ghost” in the conflict.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I don’t have time to use the first two pillars? ▼
That is why we train the physical fail-safe. If a threat materializes instantly, you go straight to mechanics. But the goal of constant psychological training is to ensure you are rarely “surprised.” Awareness buys you time.
Can I just learn the physical part? ▼
You can, but it’s dangerous. Without the philosophy to guide your intent and the psychology to manage your ego, you become part of the problem. Physical skill without wisdom leads to unnecessary conflicts and legal blow-back.
How do I train “Philosophy”? ▼
By constantly evaluating your actions against the objective of Safe Arrival. It’s the habit of asking, “Does this move me closer to home, or does it just satisfy my ego?” Philosophy is a muscle built through honest reflection.
